PADI® Open Water Diver Certification

This entry-level dive course consists of three phases:

  1. Knowledge Development – (online PADI eLearning System) to understand the basic principles of scuba diving.
  2. Confined Water Dives – to learn essential scuba skills.
  3. Open Water Dives – to use your skills and explore!

Phase 1: Knowledge Development

  • PADI’s eLearning®: 10-15 hours – Home study system

How does PADI’s eLearning® system work?

After enrolling, PADI’s eLearning® system presents you with an interactive presentation that includes videos, audio, graphics, and reading. Short quizzes let you gauge your progress, and review and correct anything you might happen to miss. This process enables you to move through the program accurately and efficiently.

You can start immediately and have the flexibility of logging in online from anywhere – on either desktop or both iOS and Android tablets. All the reading, video presentations, quizzes, and the final exam are done before starting our first pool dive.

How do you document that you’ve completed the eLearning exam?

After completion, PADI will notify your dive instructor that you are ready for the diving phase. Additionally, at the end of the eLearning presentation, you can print  your eRecord confirmation.


Phase 1 Includes:

Phase 2: Confined Water Dives

  • Day 1 Dive Lesson: 4-6 hours – 5 pool dives

With your academic sections complete, it’s now time to get your fins wet! Get ready for five back-to-back pool dives where you will develop your scuba skills to prepare for the open water.

Day 1 Schedule:
We typically meet on a Friday at either 8 am (If you can take the day off of work) or 4 pm (if you need to come after work). We will discuss any questions you may have from your course material and verify that you have completed the eLearning class. We will then do a swim test, review hand signals, equipment assembly and disassembly, and dawning your scuba kit. I will demonstrate all of the skills you are required to learn in a shallow, comfortable depth before progressing to deeper water. After the pool session, you will do a brief Knowledge Review quiz.


Phase 2 Includes:

  • 5 pool dives with your instructor
  • Scuba skills and equipment training
  • Use of scuba gear including regulator, BCD, tank and weight system
  • Mask and regulator clearing
  • Mask Removal
  • Deep Water entry techniques
  • Neutral Buoyancy techniques
  • Alternate air source use
  • PADI Dive Logbook

Phase 3: Open Water Dives

Open Water Dives

  • Day 2 Dive Lesson: 4-6 hours – 3 dives at Scuba Ranch
  • Day 3 Dive Lesson: 2 hours – 1 dive at Scuba Ranch

It’s time to hit the open water. the final two days of your dive training will be held at the Clear Springs Scuba Ranch. This 22-acre spring-fed lake has one of the most beautiful, natural habitats seen in a freshwater Texas lake.

Day 2 Schedule:
We will meet at Scuba Ranch at 8 am. We will review the skills from day one and will do the first 3 Open Water Checkout dives.

Day 3 Schedule:
We will meet at Scuba Ranch at 8 am. We will review previous skills and practice navigation. We will work on proper weighting and mastering buoyancy. My Paralenz camera will allow you to see your performance in the water from my perspective. This lesson will be the final excursion dive.

Once your instructor approval all 4 dives, you will be awarded the rating of PADI Open Water Diver, certified to buy dive equipment, book dive trips, and dive independent of an instructor or Divemaster. You will have online access to your certification card within 24 hours!

You are officially ready for the unforgettable adventures to come!

  • Use of scuba gear including regulator, BCD, tank and weight system
